AI Usage Policy
Journal of JERAS — Guidelines for the Ethical Application of AI Tools in Scientific Writing
With the emergence of generative AI and large language models (LLMs) in research, JERAS has established clear principles governing the utilization of AI tools (such as ChatGPT) in submitted research papers:
1. AI Co-Authorship Ban
Generative AI tools cannot be listed or credited as authors or co-authors on any research paper. Authorship requires human intellectual contribution, and the capacity to take public, legal, and ethical responsibility for the research findings and data integrity—capabilities that software tools do not possess.
2. Permissible Uses
AI tools may be used solely to improve readability, language clarity, and styling. Permitted tasks include:
- Correcting grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors.
- Refining writing style and academic tone of the research paper.
- Aiding in bibliographic formatting (without generating citations).
3. Prohibited Practices & Mandatory Disclosure
- Data Generation and Analysis: Authors must not use AI tools to generate experimental data, charts, tables, or to draw scientific conclusions. This is considered scientific fabrication.
- Mandatory Disclosure: If AI tools are used for language enhancement, authors must explicitly disclose this in the research paper (e.g., in the Acknowledgments or Methodology section), specifying the tool used and the extent of its usage.
- Full Author Responsibility: Authors remain fully and solely responsible for the validity, truthfulness, and integrity of their work. Any errors or misstatements caused by AI tools are the sole responsibility of the authors.
